“If everyone who’d complimented our beautiful gallery had bought just a card we’d still be open”
When artist Sarah Hamilton read this quote from a recently closed gallery she was motivated to start JUST A CARD – a campaign to encourage people to shop small and appreciate that every purchase is vital to the survival of artists, greeting card designers, independent shops and galleries. Participating small businesses, makers and supporters everywhere have been joining the campaign and sharing the message.
The appetite for low cost products threatens local businesses and the individuality of our high streets as only the retail giants selling in huge quantities can meet that demand. Support for independents is vital if we want our towns and villages to remain interesting, vibrant places to visit.
meraki. A modern Greek word that means to put your soul and a piece of yourself into what you do.
An independent shop or maker can put their heart and individuality into their offering which creates diversity and richness. It's even more important to shop small and independent right now as so many small businesses have been affected by the Coronavirus. Small and medium businesses (SMEs) make up 99.9% of all private sector businesses in the UK and are vital for a healthy economy so it's crucial to support small business.
With this in mind, 5 since years launching Just A Card, founder Sarah Hamilton recently started a Crowdfunder to help towards running costs, update the campaign website and produce more effective resources to help people engage with the campaign. It quickly smashed the £10K target and is currently on the way to £25K, demonstrating the phenomenal support that has grown around the initiative.
